Max McAuley is a performing artist with Down syndrome. Max has over 13 years of dance, theatre and performance experience as an Ensemble member of Sprung, and also as an Ensemble member of Golden Thursdays. He has also worked more broadly with a number of dance professionals independently in class, intensives and workshops to explore his many performance interests.
While Max’s background is in contemporary dance, in recent years he has expanded his dance vocabulary to include disco, hip hop and Bollywood. He has also been playing with theatrical comedy, cabaret, burlesque and drag. Max’s skills in all these dimensions have developed to such an extent that he has moved into working as an independent artist, creating his own One Man Show ‘Max to the Max’. This disability led work has allowed Max to take artistic lead on all aspects of his show including choreography, music, costumes and story telling. Each of Max’s characters in his show can also work as stand alone pieces to incorporate into a larger body of work. His roving drag work has become a standout that has opened up many opportunities for him to perform across a number of diverse platforms.
Max continues to explore new dance and movement techniques, often incorporating his passion for nature into his work as well as his interests in sub genres of film and music creating unique and exciting choreography that translates into a magical performance.
After two successful performances of Max to the Max at the Brunswick Picture House in 2024, Max has remounted his show and will be touring regional NSW in April and June 2026
