Hunter Wilson comes from a small country town of Moree NSW. He has a background in composition completing his trade with News Limited at Ultimo UTS Sydney campus and earning the National Graphic Arts industry award for excellence (1995). He went on to practice Graphic Design in one of Australia’s biggest signage companies in Queensland while working exclusively on signage for Australia Fair, Pacific Fair, Star Casino – formerly Jupiters Casino, Harley Davidson, Buell, Westfield and laying claim to the blue neon atop of the Melbourne Arts Centre.
After raising his four children while working in the pre-press print and textile industry he then went back to study in Lismore NSW winning the award for excellence in cert IV design while running his own small design and print firm which was sadly lost to the 2017 Lismore flood.
“I always wanted to study and produce art for myself but was held up and ultimately burnt out from a career of graphic/commercial art working to deadlines from design briefs that felt like creative control had gone from the designer to the consumer at the lower end” – “the customer is not always right when it comes to design, layout and composition. If I was a mechanic it would be like clients would say I want the windscreen put on the roof and made bigger! Everyone wants the logo bigger!! He laughs”
He has now made the time and leap to study the diploma of Visual Art and the Advanced diploma of Visual Art concurrently while exhibiting in local and outer state group exhibitions with great success already winning highly commended awards and starting to make sales as an emerging multidisciplinary artist in a highly competitive arena.
