Catherine Lane is an established visual artist who has lived and worked in the Northern Rivers since 1992. Her professional qualifications span Charles Sturt University, Monash University and in 2002 a Masters degree from Southern Cross University. Lane is also highly regarded as an arts educator and was the Interim Director of GAYA Ceramic Arts Centre in Ubud, Bali in 2018.
A sophisticated mix of minimal and feminine, her fresh and contemporary ceramic works are sought after nationally and internationally. In addition to an extensive background in clay, Lane incorporates a variety of media and scale in her sculptures and installations and regularly, bravely collaborates to cross disciplines with other artists, notably Linelle Stepto – (her collaborative partner in ‘The Bund Project’ – Sydney and Ocean Shores) and Moira Finucane (of Finucane and Smith, Melbourne). In 2019, an installation from ‘The Bund Project’ was accepted into the prestigious Still:National Still Life Exhibition at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and bespoke creations from Lane went with Moira Finucane’s tour of The Rapture #2 to China, Prague and Berlin.
Lane’s integrous approach to concept and materiality results in authentic objects and artworks with depth and substance, whether they have been made for use or intended to inspire activism. Her work is featured in collections including Tweed Art Gallery Australia, Icheon Ceramic Centre Korea, Gifu Prefectural Museum Japan, Gold Coast City Art Gallery Australia, Brisbane Civic Art Gallery Australia, Taiwan Cultural Centre Taiwan and Bendigo Art Gallery Australia.
