Based in Murwillumbah, Byron Coathup works as a visual artist and project curator.
Byron’s conceptual framework often surroundings living between the Gold Coast and the Northern Rivers. Place and memory play a key cornerstone to Byron’s personal work. His curatorial projects are often site-specific and are placed outside the gallery walls for audiences to rediscover spaces. His drive to collaborate and curate a sense of community and belonging through his work is evident in his projects. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at Testing Grounds (Melbourne), Byron School of Art (Mullumbimby) The Walls Art Space (Gold Coast), Gallery HOTA, M-Arts (Murwillumbah) and Falls Festival (Byron Bay). Byron has undertaken major public art projects commissions for Bleach* Arts Festival and Festival 2018 (Gold Coast Commonwealth Games).
Byron currently works as a freelance project curator. He has an excellent understanding of working with artists to realise conceptually rich and site-specific outcomes for galleries, museums, festivals and public spaces. He understands the sensitivity that is required to nurture artists and their work through the whole process. Byron is interested in collaboration as a collective tool for artists to produce and realise large-scale work.
Byron is available for freelance project management, art installation and artist support.
