ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Australian and NSW Governments have invested $312.75 million in health care for the Lismore region, which has seen the delivery of an expanded hospital with greater capacity and capability to deliver on the health needs of the local community.
The important upgrade works got underway in 2014 and have been delivered in stages, to ensure the hospital remained operational and open to patients throughout construction.
The construction works have seen the delivery of two new hospital towers and a helipad as part of the hospital expansion and a multi-deck car park.
The project is in its final stages, with refurbishment works now underway on the original buildings. These works are expected to be complete in 2022.
As part of the final stages of works, the Northern NSW Local Health District and Health Infrastructure have partnered with Art Pharmacy to deliver an artwork program for the hospital. An art trail will be installed across four floors of the hospital’s buildings. The Art Trail will feature artworks by local artists or artists with a significant connection to the region, to create a ‘Sanctuary’.
ART NARRATIVE/CURATORIAL THEME
The curatorial theme for the art trail will be centred around the connecting theme of Sanctuary. A sanctuary is nurturing, welcoming, calming, safe and sustaining. It is also connective, collectively built and integrated.
This theme will support the experience of all visitors, patients and staff of the hospital by enriching a sense of community, connection to country and exploration from the entry, through to hospital wards/levels. As an artist you will respond to one colour and theme.
Along with the overarching idea of Sanctuary, each level of the hospital is associated with a different wayfinding colour theme. The artwork will need to be in some way reference either the colour or following themes:
• Level 04 is Green; theme ‘Greenery in nature’
• Level 05 is Orange; theme ‘Earth, ochre, desert, dust’
• Level 06 is Blue; theme ‘Water’
• Level 07 is Purple; theme ‘Flowers, lavender’
Medium of artwork can include painting, photography, printmaking or collage.
