Mike Chavez was classically trained as an animator and in a career spanning over 16 years worked for such studios as Disney, Warner Brothers and Dreamworks. In 2006 he switched his focus to fine art and quickly gained kudos for his skill and uncompromising subject matter. In 2009 he was nominated as a finalist for the Archibald award, Australia’s most prestigious portrait prize. He has exhibited in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Belgium, London and New York.
His work has appeared in Vogue Living, Belle, Urbis, Lino, Empty, Art Monthly to name a few.
These days Mike can often be found getting his daily caffeine fix at Branches or waiting in the lineup at Wategos. While 2020 has seen countless businesses close their doors, Mike has bucked the trend by opening THE BOONDOCKS, a new space in the Mill Street artist complex for creating and exhibiting art, hosting events and a place to hang with other chill individuals.
