Funding

Screen NSW

Each year Screen NSW receives recurrent funding from the NSW Government in the budget for programs and operations. Screen NSW then allocates the program funding across its programs for that year. This process occurs at the start of each year to enable planning for the year across funding rounds.

Made in NSW – TV Drama – is a $55 million fund over four years (2019/20 and 2022/23) to support the attraction to NSW of significant international and domestic feature film and major TV drama production.

Regional Filming Fund (RFF) – offsets costs associated with shooting in regional areas of NSW. Regional NSW is defined as all areas in NSW outside the Sydney Metro area (excluding the ACT).

Early Development – offers support for both pre-draft and early draft costs.

The Strategic Opportunities Program – supports individual initiatives and events that demonstrate long-term benefits to the NSW screen industry.

Time Critical Shooting – supports shoots for essential material that must be gathered before a project’s official production schedule. Projects must be intended for production or post-production in NSW.

Advanced Development – contributes towards later stage draft and non-draft costs to complete financing where a strong interest has already been established in the marketplace.

Production Finance program – provides funding for projects produced or post-produced in NSW. Funding allocations are guided by ratios linking the Screen NSW contribution to the amount spent in the State.

Industry Development Program – provides funds to organisations that create professional development opportunities for NSW screen practitioners at various stages of their career. Funding is provided for one-off or annual events including workshops, masterclasses, forums and professional development activities.

Audience Development Program – supports public screenings, festivals or tours that provide opportunities for audiences to see and experience quality screen content and innovative practice, and one-off or annual events including those in single or multiple venues.

Screen Australia

Screen Australia offers funding to support the development, production and marketing of Australian screen content, as well as for the development of Australian talent and screen production businesses. If you’re starting out in the industry, check out the Starting In the Industry page.

The Temporary Interruption Fund (TIF) – a $50 million fund made available by the Australian Government and administered by Screen Australia. The aim of TIF is to support local productions that have been halted by insurers not providing coverage for COVID-19. The TIF will provide coverage to film and television productions for specific events relating to COVID-19 that could occur in Australia during the last two weeks of pre-production and the period of principal photography. Screen Australia’s total liability under TIF for a production will be capped at 60% of the total budget, or $4 million, whichever is less. An applicant can agree with Screen Australia for coverage at a lesser amount than the capped amount.

The Producer Offset – a refundable tax offset (rebate) for producers of Australian feature films, television and other projects. Because it’s underpinned by income tax legislation, it represents a source of funds for producers of eligible Australian projects.

Feature Films – offers funding to support development, production, distribution and festivals, events and awards.

Television and Online – offers funding to support development, production and festivals, events and awards.

Documentaries – offers funding to support development, production, distribution and festivals, events and awards.

Indigenous – offers funding to support development, production, distribution, festivals, events and awards and sector development.

The Next 25 YearsCore to the Screen Australia Indigenous Department’s The Next 25 Years strategy is making connections with new talent and assisting creators in taking advantage of the range of opportunities available.

Australian Government (Office for the Arts)

The Australian Screen Production Incentive – provides tax incentives for film, television and other screen production in Australia.

  • The Producer Offset entitles production companies to a 40 per cent rebate on eligible feature films and 20 per cent on other eligible formats for productions with significant Australian content.
  • The Location Offset is a 16.5 per cent rebate that supports the production of large-budget film and television projects shot in Australia.
  • The Post, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) Offset is a 30 per cent rebate that supports work on post, digital and visual effects production (PDV) in Australia, regardless of where a project is shot.
  • The Location Incentive ensures that Australia remains competitive in attracting large budget footloose international film and television productions, thereby providing opportunities for Australian cast, crew, post-production companies and other screen production service providers to participate in production. It will contribute to the development of the Australian screen production industry’s capabilities and help ensure its future viability. The Government has committed a further $400 million to increase funds available under Location Incentive over the next three years and extend the program until 2026–27, complementing the $140 million announced in May 2018. This funding will focus on extending the pipeline of production coming to Australia creating new job and training opportunities for Australians. Grants will be provided to large budget international screen productions undertaking filming in Australia that perform strongly against the assessment criteria.
