NEWS

We thought it had been a little too long since we featured a creative service here on NRC, and what better way to highlight some of the amazing talent in our region than to profile Good Behaviour, who recently designed and developed the new Arts Northern Rivers website. Good Behaviour is an international creative company that partners with ambitious commerce and culture-based clients to define, design, and build identities and products, unlocking new value and realising potential. Today we have a chat with owners, Dane and Brad. Enjoy!

Hi guys, tell us a bit about Good Behaviour and the services you offer:

Good Behaviour is a creative company based in Byron Bay, we partner with ambitious people, both commerce and culture-based, from kind of everywhere now, to define, design, and build identities and products (mainly digital). We’re really interested in helping clients unlock new value and realise potential. Our primary services include Strategy and Brand, Creative Direction, Graphic Identity, Website Design, App Design, Development, and production of post-launch services like SEO and Email Marketing. We’re outcome driven so we’re willing to learn and trial services that bridge the gap for our clients.

Who are the faces behind Good Behaviour?

The company is led by good mates, Dane Noakes and Brad Cain. But we do lean on our network of friends, who bring a good mix of perspectives to each project.

Can you tell us about what it’s like being a creative service in the Northern Rivers? What kind of people do you deal with day-to-day?

Byron Bay is quite unique compared to most regional towns in Australia. There are people at the mercy of the stars and then there’s the people trying to get to Mars. I think it’s a healthy balance of capitalism and anti-establishment.

On your profile you describe your work being purposeful and rhythmic, can you tell us about this duality in your work?

I reckon we’ve changed this 10 times in 3 years, haha. But, the sentiment is the same – we’re dedicated to cohesion and consistency, beauty, making something interesting but what leads this is the client’s purpose.

Can you speak about the importance of community in your practice?

I think it’s extremely important. We were both working from home as freelance designers prior to Good Behaviour, which left us feeling insulated and a little disconnected. The studio has provided a space for us both to grow personally and professionally, and allow us to collaborate with friends and businesses in the area. It just makes more sense to hang out and do good work together.

Are there any standout projects you can walk us through? Maybe one of your bigger jobs?

We worked with Estēe Lauder in February and have been looking forward to sharing the work. But with bigger brands come longer waits and NDA’s. We created their concept activation graphic identity, signage, packaging and printed collateral which was ambitious and refreshing getting to work with the tangible again. One other project that just launched was with Arts Northern Rivers, extending their brand and online presence. It’s always nice working with good people within our community.

Your work is so specific to your client and their needs, how do you get from concept to a full delivery?

They’re heavily involved in the process. We ask an extraordinary amount of questions and their answers lead our design direction.

Any advice for emerging designers and creatives with an interest in branding and web development?

Youtube everything you don’t know (business or skill related). Focus on improving your mental state and then move those learnings into your practice. Be assertive, but humble and ask people you respect for guidance with genuine curiosity. Don’t be afraid of asking a second time.

Do you have any exciting news / projects / clients coming up?

We’ve been working with a client in Greece. We’ve just finished the design and wireframes for their online accommodation platform. Similar in structure to Airbnb but tailored to luxury stays in the Greek Islands. We’re looking for a good excuse to turn this project into a holiday.
