Phoebe Willis is an emerging Australian artist, whose work is currently engaged in dissecting the gambling industry. Her practice is constantly evolving as a response to her research and the changes in the industry she is interrogating. Willis’ collages and paper weavings, small yet captivating, are crafted with precision and care. Her colours and composition are carefully curated to employ the same deceptive tools the gambling industry exploits in order to lure the audience in. Willis often works with found and recycled materials; each scratch card displayed in her work is a part of someone’s daily life. As a means to expand her creative process and conversations surrounding her work, she often engages in large scale paintings. Willis’ work provokes discussions about issues of gambling and addiction that are largely normalised in Australia and that in various forms slot into all socioeconomic classes.
