Byron Shire creative Jacob Boylan is exhibiting his solo show Dire Contact at Lone Goat Gallery, opening this Friday the 21st of February.
Through the use of visual puns and the re-contextualising of existing imagery, Jacob presses us to look at banal imagery in new light. The recycling of imagery is important to Jacob’s practice, in an image saturated world, he sees it as reducing what he calls visual pollution. With a deadpan, tongue-in-cheek style, and a limited colour pallet, his work explores concepts of Australian identity, often using references to sport, class, colonialism, alcoholism, pub culture and gambling.
Dire Contact is a continuation of Jacob Boylan’s exploration of his experience of contemporary Australia. Guided by the restrictions of found imagery Jacob attempts to navigate his way through cliché’s, hypocrisies, stereotypes and everyday banalities of Australian society.
In this exhibition he has especially focused on the subtleties of our multi-faceted “national identity”, asking the audience to prod past their initial impressions and look deeper into what the images represent. Jacob has also experimented with materials often associated with the worksite, such as silicon, house paint, found marine ply and wall bog, mixing them with paper collage and screen printing. An ode to the overwhelming working-middle class of this country.
Jacob’s signature screenprints have been exhibited locally at Byron School of Art’s BSA Project Space, Yeah, Nice! Gallery, RVCA Gallery and A Spot of Genius.
Dire Contact is open at Lone Goat Gallery from February 21 – March 17, 2020.
