Nardia Hill

Nardia Hill is a multidisciplinary visual artist. Her practice interchanges between drawing, textiles and sculpture. A post-modernist at heart, Hill playfully substitutes pencil and paper for textile and thread. She pushes the boundaries of drawing by engaging both hand and machine embroidery techniques to express representational and non-representational mark making. This mark making is counter intuitive and explores drawing in reverse as the cloth moves and machine needle and thread are still. Her work responds to the world around her in the form of contemporary still life, landscape and the everyday, reconstructing delicate and free forming compositions.

A collector of fabric, her domestic sewing skills assist in her momentum to draw with thread and her Toyota Oekaki sewing machine is her vehicle to explore this mark making. Hill’s love of sewing is evident in her intuitive, gentle and thoughtful compositions. Her affinity with fabric and thread has been passed down to her by her mother.

She has exhibited in many local group/ solo exhibitions in various locations where she has lived including the Northern Rivers, Northern Tablelands, Central Coast, Shoalhaven and Clarence Valley. Hill has exhibited at Shoalhaven City Arts Centre and Grafton Regional Gallery.

Hill holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts, Southern Cross University, 1999, Graduate Diploma of Education, University of Newcastle, 2000, Museum Studies (post grad), Macquarie and Deakin University. She aims to complete her Master of Museum Studies, Deakin University in the future.
