Mullo Studio is a graphic design studio nestled in the Byron Bay Hinterland town of Mullumbimby. Since opening at the beginning of 2018, Mullo Studio has created an ever-growing community of thriving, happy clients. Last week we caught up with Creative Director, Lucy Tann to discuss the Mullumbimby creative culture and what’s ahead for Mullo.

Mullo Studio is contributing to a rapidly growing Arts and Culture scene in Mullumbimby – what do you think is driving this growth?

I think there are a few reasons why the Northern Rivers has become an amazing hub for creatives.

  1. The unemployment rate is high. It’s literally make your own work or move back to the city. Small businesses are going off at the moment, combine that with the rich creative culture here, and you have a bucket load of working creatives in the one spot. It’s exciting, collaborative and it pushes everyone to be better and smarter.
  2. Culturally, it’s been a place of freedom and artistic expression since the 70s. Having that as a foundation has of course affected the culture of place, the types of people who are drawn here and remain here and the inspiration we naturally have around us.
  3. The land on which we work, Bundjalung Country, is the reason why so many of us are here. With nature comes creative expression and freedom. They are intrinsically linked.

Mullumbimby in particular feels like it’s about to explode. Mullum had four exhibition openings across town in one night the other week! Shared, the Co working space behind Punch and Daisy is full of beautiful minds and creative souls. The new food hub in the Mullum Industrial Estate is home to some of the best foodie places in the area — The Branches and Farmer Jo to name a few. Baker and Daughters always has a beautifully crafted bread sculpture in their window by Bangalow based floral artists, Braer. OhBabushka, creators of Paradiso Magazine, work out of the industrial estate in Mullum. It’s thriving. One venture leads to another which leads to thriving creativity and businesses, which fuel this town. I feel fortunate to be here, amidst this creative boom.

Can you tell us more about the many exciting developments that Mullo Studio is bringing in 2020?

Oh yes! I am excited to carve out space to work on projects that are near and dear to my heart. Mullo Studio will finally be opening their online shop of way cool merchandise and prints as an ode to our deep, deep infatuation with Australian flora. We will be producing a tarot deck to nurture our love and curiosity for the spiritual world. We’ll be running branding workshops to foster our passion for education and community. And an exhibition, to celebrate this beautiful land on which we work. In addition to these, our client work will undoubtedly take us to places we could never imagine, and for that, I am so grateful to have this truly special business.

What is your favourite part of the design process?

The people. I love people and I’m fortunate enough to be to hear people’s stories as part of my job. I get to hold space for passionate people. Business and self are so closely linked and it is a privilege that my clients share so much of themselves with me. Without knowing their story and their business’ story, I cannot begin creating. Mullo Studio will always be compassionate and accepting of others, with producing thoughtful design, coming in a close second. Community is imperative for survival.
